Direct Action Everywhere (DxE)
11th August 2017
A common form of performative activism is the supermarket funeral/vigil. The aim of the performance, seen here by DxE activists, is to draw a direct line between the animal products on the shelves with the non-human individuals that are being mourned for, and in whole mourning those who have been turned into products at the chosen supermarket and beyond. Tragic stories of the non-human individuals' short lives are told, highlighting their agency for life and the emotions they felt. This public mourning turns the idea of the non-human from a forgettable commodity to a valued being with the right to life and respect as any other human and non-human.
