A popular form of animal rights activism is placing the human body in the space of an exploited non-human body, particularly caged. Placing a human in a cage on public display confronts the idea that animals can be happy, content and healthy in cage. Instead, with the image of a human in a cage, it is obvious freedom and liberty are absent. In human systems cages mainly used to stop dangerous and guilty people from participating in mainstream society. Yet non-human animals are not often seen as perpetrators worthy of such incarceration. Contrasting the limited space of a cage with the seemingly limitless space of the public landscape, shows the extent in which beings are stripped of their ability to choose a life of their own, and their dignity taken from them.
